Calculate percentages easily: find a percentage of a number, express one number as a percentage of another, and work out percentage increase or decrease between two values.

(a) What is X% of Y?

Result (a) will appear here.

(b) X is what % of Y?

Result (b) will appear here.

(c) Percentage increase or decrease from X to Y

Result (c) will appear here.

How to use

  1. For (a), enter the percentage and the number, then click Calculate.
  2. For (b), enter both numbers to find the first as a percentage of the second.
  3. For (c), enter the starting and ending values to see the signed percentage increase or decrease.

How do I calculate what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the first number by the second number, then multiply the result by 100. For example, 25 as a percentage of 200 is 12.5 percent, because 25 divided by 200 equals 0.125. Use calculator (b) on this page and it will do that division and labelling for you instantly.

What is the difference between percentage increase and decrease?

A percentage increase means the new value is higher than the old value, so the result is positive. A percentage decrease means the new value is lower, so the result is negative in maths but shown here as a decrease. Both are calculated by dividing the change by the original value and multiplying by 100.

Can I use this calculator for discounts and tax?

Yes. For a discount, calculate the percentage of the original price, then subtract it to find the sale price. For tax or a tip, calculate the percentage amount and add it to the base price. The increase and decrease calculator on this page handles both cases when you enter the before and after values.
